Viber Gives Free VoIP Calls on iPhone, Coming to Android

Last month, a free VoIP app called Viber arrived at the App Store and functions pretty much the way iPhone users wish the Skype application would. Not surprisingly, Viber became a pretty big hit as everyone scrambled to find ways to make cheap calls over the holidays. The Viber for iOS app allows you to make free VoIP calls to fellow Viber users over WiFi, 3G, and Bluetooth. Despite the fact that the service costs nothing, users report fast call connections and great audio quality. The moment you install the app, Viber syncs your phone’s contact list and indicates which one of your friends also have Viber installed. You can instantly make free calls to them using your iPhone no matter what model you use.

The great thing about Viver is that even when the app isn’t running on the background, you can still receive Viber-to-Viber calls from your contacts. When you receive an incoming call, your phone rings and you get a push notification from Apple’s servers. The moment you hit “answer” on the notification, you are connected to your call in just seconds.
