VoIP for the iPhone Coming Soon!

Wouldn’t it be great if iPhone users could call each other without using up their cellphone minutes? Global IP Solutions must have thought so, because two days ago they released a software development kit (SDK) so developers can come up with a VoIP application for the iPhone. Although we already have Truphone, the first and only iPhone stand-alone VoIP app, developers will probably push the limits of VoIP possibilities for the iPhone using Global IP Solutions SDK. Their SDK can be used to create stand-alone VoIP apps or integrate VoIP into chat programs, games, and social networking. It’ll be really interesting to see what game developers will do with VoIP because if they do it well, the iPhone will be a sure competitor for gadgets like the PSP and Nintendo DS.
Don’t start downgrading your plans just yet – the SDK can only build VoIP apps that will work over Wi-Fi, not through the Edge or 3G network.
