Skype Might Return to the UAE Soon!

If you’re a Filipino living in the Philippines, you probably have a family member or a friend who works in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Using your mobile phone to call them can get pretty expensive but unfortunately, there is no other way to communicate with them by voice since Skype access and other VoIP services are blocked in the UAE.

Well it looks like all this might change very soon. General director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Mohamed Al Ghanim told Arabian Business that UAE residents might be able to use Skype. The reason why Skype was inaccessible to begin with is that VoIP services in the UAE were unlicensed since the TRA began operations in 2004. They put a process together for VoIP companies to get the required license, which is supposed to protect the consumer if the VoIP company doesn’t deliver the promised service.

Al Ghanim added that the TRA is working on a framework for VoIP providers. Once they are done with the framework, foreign VoIP companies can finally come back into the UAE. As of now, only Etisalat and Du are licensed to provide VoIP services to UAE residents.
