Mobile VoIP company Fring just launched a new service called FringOut, a not-so-subtly named feature that aims to compete with Skype’s SkypeOut. FringOut allows Fring users to call mobile phones and landlines of non-Fring users by buying credits. FringOut is only available on Nokia S60 phones, but an app for iPhone and Android devices should be out soon. In terms of prices, calls begin at 1c/minute, which is cheaper than SkypeOut’s 2.3c/minute rate. Of course, not all countries enjoy the 1c/minute rate, but Fring provides a rate calculator to help you determine if FringOut is a good deal for you.

Sign up to FringOut at www.fring.com.

JNSoftware just released a versatile telephony tool for Mac OS X called Dialectic. Dialectic allows users to dial phone numbers through Bluetooth mobile phones, landlines, VoIP services, and more. Besides that, you can integrate Dialectic with contact management applications like Microsoft Entourage, Marketcircle Daylite, FileMaker Pro, Palm Desktop, as well as Apple’s own iCal and Address Book. For those who already have telephony hardware and software installed on your Mac, Dialectic works with Cisco IP phones, Ovolab’s Phlink, Parliant PhoneValet, and other VoIP softphones like Skype, Gizmo, and WengoPhone.

Dialectic costs $25 and requires Mac OS X v10.4 or later.

I didn’t realize that mobile operators disable VOIP (SIP) features on Nokia N95. What use is an N95 with a disabled VoiP. But Fring comes to the rescue and explains how they managed to enable the VoIP in N95 phones.

Fring can mVoIP on any N95 handset because fring manages the VoIP configuration independent of the operator or VoIP settings. What these operators did was simply disable or hide the Internet settings from the specific handsets they distribute. This means that on these specific models from those operators, unless you install a client like fring, you can’t configure VoIP telephony services. Because fring works independent of the operator or VoIP settings, fring isn’t affected by these limitations.

For those that do have sufficient bandwidth, a fast enough computer, and a capable webcam, there’s an experimental hack for Skype that allows you to increase the resolution from the ancient 320 x 240 standard up to a much more tolerable 640 x 480. The hack only works one way, so users on both ends will have to apply it in order to see each other’s zits with increased clarity. If we had a way of routing live high definition video through our PC, we’d attempt to increase the resolution even further, although that would of course require the help of something we’ve always found it hard to acquire: friends. read more?

A lucky find by my friend MaTiAz seems to point towards some form of VoIP functionality in upcoming firmwares. This reference to Skype is hidden in the decrypted version of vshmain.prx from Firmware 3.10, basically the latest firmware if you don’t count 3.11. Nobody has yet checked the presence of its reference in the latest firmware (3.11) but it’s most probably there since not much has changed between the two firmwares.read more?

The Windows version of the video and telephony software Skype reads and stores the BIOS data of a users computer. As a hacker with the pseudonym Myria reports in a blog entry, once the software is launched it saves an executable file called 1.com in the user’s temporary folder. This file contains code that transmits the data found in the BIOS address area of the application to be launched. It is not yet clear what the Skype software does with the data, which may contain, among other things, the motherboard serial number. The mysterious .com file was only noticed because of an error message that Skype outputs when it is launched on systems running on 64-bit versions of Windows. 64-bit versions lack the “NT Virtual DOS Machine” (NTVDM), which allows direct access to BIOS memory pages and is required to execute the program. Since myria’s blog entry is dated February the 6th 2007 presumably Skype added the BIOS reading code to their applications relatively recently. read more?

- Mobile VoIP pioneer Truphone today announced that Google Talk users can connect with Truphone mobile handsets anywhere in the world for free.

Truphone is a free piece of software that enables Wi-Fi-equipped Nokia mobile phones to make internet-rate phone calls (VoIP calls) over Wi-Fi connections. When the handset is not in Wi-Fi range it reverts from being a ‘Truphone’ to being a normal mobile phone, so people need only one phone.

‘On-net’ Truphone users show as ‘online’ in Google Talk, enabling people to know exactly when they can make a free call. Calls between Google Talk and Truphone are free because they are pure VoIP calls and take place entirely over the internet. Communication between Google’s servers and Truphone’s servers is via the standard XMPP protocol.
