Gmail Now has Video and Voice Chat
It looks like Google may have just come up with a good alternative to Skype. Google joined Microsoft and Yahoo into making communication a more social experience and rolled out a video and voice chat to its free e-mail service, Gmail. It’s a very simple add-on that works right from your browser and does not have scores of features like Skype does. The voice and video chat does the trick though and for some people, the basics is all they really need.
All you need to do is download the 2MB add-on, which supports Firefox, IE, Chrome for PC users and Firefox and Safari on OSX for Mac users. Once the video feature has been added to your account, the “Video & more” option appears on the lower left corner of your G-Talk chat box. Making calls to someone who has not yet installed the Video Chat add-on will invite them to do so.
I wonder if Google plans on adding other features to the Video chat but for now, I think it makes a nice and useful addition to the Gmail experience.
