iPhone 3G Released in Tokyo

Since the Japanese are like, the white people of Asia, they got to enjoy the debut of the Apple iPhone 3G this morning.
The iPhone 3G launch in the trendy Harajuku district at 7 a.m. marks the first time the iPhone’s been available in Japan. Over a thousand die-hard Apple fans were queuing in front of the SoftBank Mobile flagship store, eager to get their hands on that shiny new phone while supplies last. When the doors finally opened, it took about twenty minutes for a customer to leave with his new iPhone 3G in his hands. Unfortunately for the 900-something people lined up behind him, not all of them got to walk away with their new phones in hand. Softbank had to resume sales at its other stores and retailers at noon.
Meanwhile, demand for unlocked iPhone 3G units in the Asian underground market is soaring. Apparently, an unlocked phone should fetch about $700 in Hong Kong, which will then be shipped to buyers in the US and China. Bidders in Chinese-based online auction websites are even willing to pay as much as $1,400 for the 16GB iPhone.
