Skype Offers Unlimited Calls to Europe and Asia

Although Skype already has unlimited call options to landline phones in the United States and Canada for $3/month, they are now extending this offer to 34 countries including most of Europe, New Zealand, Australia, China, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, and Chile. This also includes VoIP calls to cellphones too but only for Canada, Hong Kong, China, and Singapore. All this will only cost $9.95 a month. Skype is also currently working on another plan for $5.95 that will allow users to make free calls to Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City. Calls to other cities and provinces in Mexico will also get major discounts.
The new plans is part of Skype’s recovery from last year’s damages due to eBay’s overvaluing Skype. Though Skype said its subscribers used approximately 1.7 billion minutes of paid calls, free computer to computer calls were at 14.2 billion minutes. In terms of computer to computer calls, Skype is facing major competition. It also doesn’t help that other telecommunications networks are undercutting Skype’s overseas earnings. Complicated tariff arrangements and rates also limits Skype to calling cellphones only in certain countries. What with other VoIP services offering many cheap alternatives, some of which work with existing cellphones and landlines, Skype is being pushed to provide value to its users to keep its dominant position in the market.
